Notes:

1. The title of this work, Marchands des Quatre Saisons, refers to itinerant salesmen, dragging or pushing their carts through city streets and offering just about anything for sale. These pushcart vendors could appear at any time, in Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer, which is to say in any of the Four Seasons (Quatre Saisons).

2. This etching was printed in 25 impressions and then later used in a publication Le Studio in a special issue dated 1912-1913. This work does not relate to Villon’s Section d’or works from 1912-1914 nor even to his pre-Section d’or portraits of Renée from 1911. Contrary to Auberty & Pérussaux and also to Ginestet & Pouillon, who all have dated this etching 1912-1913, we are here dating the work to about 1908.
