Notes:
1. Guillaumin was a significant participant in seven of the eight Impressionist
exhibitions which took place between 1874 and 1886. The respect accorded to
Guillaumin, from within the impressionist circles, is evident in the recent
exhibition of selections from the collection of Van Gogh’s friend and doctor,
Dr. Paul Gachet (Dr. Gachet : A Friend of Cézanne and Van Gogh, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York, the Grand Palais in Paris and the Van Gogh Museum in
Amsterdam, 1999-2000). Dr. Gachet collected above all four artists: Cézanne,
Guillaumin, Pissarro and Van Gogh. As listed in the above catalogue, Dr.
Gachet’s exact holdings were: 26 paintings, 21 drawings and 5 etchings by
Cézanne; 28 paintings, 4 drawings and pastels and 4 etchings or lithographs by
Guillaumin; 13 paintings and 14 etchings by Pissarro; and 28 paintings, 31
drawings and watercolors and 3 prints by Van Gogh. Dr. Gachet’s holdings were
mostly acquired in the 1890s and directly from the then living artists.
2. This work will be included in the Guillaumin: Catalogue Raisonné being
prepared by Dominique Fabiani and Philippe Cazeau.
