NORTHERN
FRENCH MASTER, about 1500
The Virgin and Child Enthroned, Northern France, perhaps Paris, about 1500
Large miniature on a leaf of an illuminated manuscript in French verse on vellum
214 x 150 mm.; 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches
Notes:
This work is from a Book of Hours or similar prayerbook. Here the Virgin is shown crowned and holding the Child as two angels hover at the sides, lifting the curtains of a canopy around the throne. Painted in colors and liquid gold, the miniature itself measures 70 x 90 mm. This scene is presented above a large initial and the verse in French (which is complete): "Glorieuse virge marie" (see: A. Langfors Les Incipits des poèmes français, 1917, p. 149). The verso is ruled for twenty-seven lines, with full-length panel border of colored flowers and acanthus leaves on partially-colored gold ground.
