ANDRÉ LHOTE

Bordeaux 1885 - 1962 Paris

Born in Bordeaux in 1885, Lhote was impressed with the Cézanne retrospective in 1907 as well as by the Expressionist aspects of the Fauve woodcuts of Derain, Matisse and Vlaminck. In 1911-1912, Lhote was part of the Section d'Or artists, meeting at the studios of Villon and Gleizes. All these influences were reflected in Lhote's paintings of 1907-1920. In the following decades he created a synthesis of "naturalist" and Cubist motifs. Through his paintings, teachings and writings, Lhote became one of the most influential artists of his generation.
