The very rare, early 1st State of this work is one of the most sought-after etchings by Piranesi. In the second and following states, the price has been eliminated and impressions are invariably posthumous. Piranesi’s title for this work: Veduta dell’Anfiteatro Flavio, detto Colosseo (View of the Amphitheater Flavio, called the Colosseum) has been shortened by Hind to: "The Colosseum".
