1. A very strong, well-printed and early impression. Nowell-Usticke’s 1st State (of seven states).
2. Followed closely by Rembrandt, the biblical reference here is Mark 12, 15:
...They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area, he [Jesus] began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. He did not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple area. Then he informed them, saying:
My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. But you have made it a den of thieves...
3. The former owner of this work, the late S. William Pelletier, was one of the most astute 20th century collectors of 17th century Dutch prints. Together with Leonard J. Slatkes and Linda Stone-Ferrier, Pelletier was the author of Adriaen Van Ostade: Etchings of Peasant Life in Holland’s Golden Age (edited by Patricia Phagan), Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, 1993.
