RAOUL DUFY

Le Havre 1877 - 1953 Forcalquier (Basses-Alpes)

One of France’s major twentieth-century artists, Dufy, together with Derain, Matisse and Vlaminck, founded the Fauve movement (1904-1907). Dufy also is a major figure in the history of lithography. According to Castleman (Riva Castleman,Prints of the Twentieth Century: A History, Museum of Modern Art, New York:, 1975: p. 95), Dufy’s lithographs of the 1920s “…share with Matisse’s work of the period a quick-sketch quality primarily achieved by the deft management of the lithographic crayon…”.
